There’s Room For More Self Esteem And A More Positive Attitude If Those Who Involve Themselves In Excessive And Abusive Drinking Can Become Persuaded To Get The Alcohol Counseling And The Mental Health Counseling They Require

June 28th, 2010

The medical community defines numerous medical conditions and diseases as “silent killers.” Medical illnesses such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure, obstructive sleep apnea, mesothelioma, osteoporosis, diabetes, heart disease and a number of different types of cancer such as rectal cancer, breast cancer, colon cancer, and lung cancer are rather well known silent killers.

These medical ailments are known as silent killers because early on in the medical ailment there are usually no symptoms to imply that a difficulty exists. Then as the medical ailment progresses, nevertheless, and as the problems start to surface, a medical catastrophe can result.

Careless and Excessive Drinking Is a Silent Killer

I assert that excessive and irresponsible drinking is also a silent killer. In truth, some individuals can drink for several years without suffering from any unhealthy and significant alcohol related difficulties in their lives. When hazardous and abusive drinking continues for a number of years, it can be noted, unhealthy alcohol effects become more evident and more complicated. Perhaps the best illustration about which I am stating occurs during the transition from alcohol abuse to alcoholism.

Without a doubt, quite a few alcohol related predicaments can be masked and fairly easily hidden while an individual engages in in hazardous drinking. When the drinker in reality becomes a chronic alcohol abuser or an alcoholic, however, the unhealthy alcohol effects become quite evident and more serious. Regrettably, this information about alcoholism and alcohol abuse doesn’t seem to be conversed about as much as it ought to be.

Problem Areas That are Adversely Affected by Careless and Hazardous Drinking As Time Continues

What are a few of the areas in life that are negatively affected over time by continuous and repeated heavy and hazardous drinking? When people first begin to involve themselves in abusive and excessive drinking, they are regularly unaware of what their abusive drinking is doing to their health, to their relationships, to their finances, to their mental health, and to their jobs.

As the heavy and hazardous drinking is repeated over time, conversely, it regularly results in commitment, marital, relationship, communication, and friendship issues and many times results in affairs and divorce. In a similar way, many, if not most heavy drinkers in due course experience alcohol induced health problems such as a loss of energy, alcohol poisoning, sleep disturbances, and hangovers. Other alcohol induced medical issues include the following: vitamin deficiency, nerve damage, stomach ulcers, sexual problems, and liver disease.

What is more, many, if not most people who involve themselves in alcohol abuse in due course suffer from alcohol induced financial difficulties. Paradoxically, while many drinkers grumble about their financial circumstances, they frequently make their financial circumstances more problematic by spending more of their money on alcohol.

Stress Management, Anger Management, and Time Management Issues

Similarly, excessive drinking commonly leads to anger management, stress management, and time management issues. Not only this but, many, if not most individuals who involve themselves in alcohol abuse, because of their hazardous drinking, in due course display work issues such as poor performance evaluations, alcohol related accidents, showing up late for work, making mistakes on the job, and absenteeism.

Mental Health Difficulties Like Depression

Additionally, irresponsible and excessive drinking in the long run results in a variety of mental health issues such as obsession, denial, extreme mood swings, depression, and anxiety. And lastly, it should come as no shock that people who involve themselves in alcohol abuse can receive a “drunk while driving arrest” almost any day or night of the week due to their heavy drinking and driving.

The Moral of the Story

The lesson to be learned is this: people who engage in irresponsible and hazardous drinking need to learn how to drink in moderation or get the alcohol detox and the alcohol therapy they require. This is important for individuals who involve themselves in excessive drinking so that they can either drink responsibly or start to lead an alcohol free life and steer clear from the huge number of alcohol related problems highlighted above. Undoubtedly, obtaining top shelf alcohol abuse help will be important along these lines.

It is also important for people who engage in heavy drinking to either learn how to drink in moderation or totally refrain from drinking so that they can stay away from a life of alcoholism. To put it briefly, people who abuse alcohol need to abstain from irresponsible and abusive drinking so that they can avoid the alcohol induced silent killers that are linked to abusive and excessive drinking. Again, getting professional alcohol abuse rehab will certainly go a long way toward meeting this goal.

An Alcoholic Male Registers For Rehab, Gets Alcohol Detoxification and Treatment For His Depression and His Alcohol Addiction, and Starts to Live Life to the Fullest

June 2nd, 2010

Barry used to boast to his drinking friends how he could keep a demanding and fulltime job and get inebriated just about every night. Regrettably, after involving himself in this destructive lifestyle for nearly two-and-a-half years, he started to have a variety of alcohol related issues.

Barry Starts to Exhibit Several Alcohol Related Issues

For example, he had a real difficult time getting up for work because he felt so worn-out when he got up. Furthermore, just about every morning Barry suffered from a very bad hangover. Without a doubt, the combination of his hangovers and his lack of energy did not make it easy for him to get up and feel inspired to go to work. To make things worse, about a week ago he got his third drunk driving citation in the past two years.

To complicate things further, at his place of employment his last two performance appraisals were less than acceptable. And lastly, his relationship with his girlfriend had worsened due to his angry outbursts, depression, lack of patience, and his financial difficulties.

Although Barry was only twenty-nine years old, he frankly started looking like he was in his mid thirties. Regrettably, this is what excessive and hazardous drinking can do to a person. And in all honesty he comprehended that he was suffering from the adverse consequences of alcohol abuse or alcoholism and that he was too young to fritter away his life to hazardous and irresponsible drinking. So initially he tried to drink responsibly and in moderation. Sadly, he soon realized that he lost all control after consuming his first drink. Stated in a slightly different way, after his first drink he invariably proceeded to get drunk. Since this was an event that was repeated every time he went out to drink, this obviously distressed him a great deal. In fact, he started to wonder if he was manifesting some of the signs of alcoholism and alcohol abuse.

Barry Decides Make an Appointment to See His Family Doctor

After mentioning his excessive alcohol consumption and his hazardous and irresponsible drinking with his girlfriend, he eventually decided to make an appointment to see his healthcare practitioner. When Barry saw his healthcare professional, he actually declared that he has been drinking in an abusive manner, that he may be displaying alcoholic signs, and that he wants to abstain from drinking. He said that drinking responsibly and in moderation doesn’t work for him and, consequently, he wants to learn how he can develop an alcohol-free lifestyle.

Barry also told his healthcare professional about his depression and how this mental health issue was adversely influencing his relationship with his lady friend. His physician referred Barry to Doctor Dent, an alcohol and drug addiction therapist, who inspired Barry to enroll in a drug and alcohol rehabilitation center as an in-patient for alcohol detox and alcohol rehabilitation. Fortunately, Barry would also be able to get medical attention for his depression at this facility.

Refraining From Drinking Was the Best Decision Barry Had Ever Made

After three months of intensive treatment intensive rehabilitation, Barry left the residential rehabilitation facility and continued his recovery via going to local Alcoholics Anonymous meetings and via outpatient therapy. Encouraged to change his life in a healthier manner, Barry bought some vitamins at a health store and a cookbook. He then joined a gym and began working out two or three times per week. Within four months Barry was a new individual. He now looked younger than he was, he wasn’t depressed anymore, he was in shape, he was eating nutritious meals, and most significant of all, he maintained his sobriety for many months. He also became more patient, he didn’t resort to angry outbursts, and he became a more loving person in his relationship with his lady friend. In a word, stopping drinking was the best decision Barry had ever made.

A Young Lady Gets Arrested for “Driving Under the Influence”, Gets Depressed, Talks to The Human Resources Manager, and Gets Inspired to Turn Her Life Around, Recoup Her Self Respect, and Become More Successful and Happy

May 24th, 2010

Shelly was recognized at work as an extremely conservative person who had an exceptional work record. She in no way attended any of the happy hours immediately after work and it was recognized through the workplace that she was quite a religious individual who commonly talked about the hazards of alcohol abuse and alcohol addiction in our country.

Try to think of the shock within the company when one Monday morning Shelly didn’t show up for work and not a soul had heard from her. In truth, it wasn’t until approximately 10:45 in the morning that the human resources department received a phone call about Shelly from the the jail downtown.

Shelly Goes Out Partying With a Few of Her University Pals

Apparently, Shelly went out drinking with several of her college buddies Saturday night and at some time close to 3:00 Sunday morning, Shelly was arrested for a DUI. Because her blood alcohol content level (BAC) was very high, she was required to spend one day in the local jail.

Shelly Talks to Her Manager and The Human Resources Manager

When Shelly came to work on Tuesday morning, she promptly informed her superior what had occurred and she asked if she could possibly go and talk to the Human Resources manager about her “driving while intoxicated” arrest.

When she got to the Human Resources department and met with the director, she discussed that she had not been drunk since her university days and that she was quite humiliated about her DUI arrest. She also articulated the point that she required some assistance getting an experienced and productive DUI lawyer who would represent her “driving while intoxicated” case. In other words, Shelly really wanted the Human Resources manager to agree that she needed to see a DUI attorney.

The Human Resources manager told Shelly that she should make an appointment with somebody inside the company employee’s assistance program to go over any future drinking issue that she may have. The HR director also mentioned that she needs to go over her need to hire a DWI attorney to represent her with respect to her “drunk driving” case.

Not only this but the Human Resources manager told Shelly that it was a good thing that she hoped to hire a DWI attorney mainly because of the difficulties and severe outcomes that happen to be connected to a “driving while intoxicated” conviction.

The Human Resources director could tell that Shelly was visibly depressed and humiliated by this overall scenario. As a consequence, he informed Shelly that while he doesn’t think that conscientious folks ought to ever get behind the wheel right after drinking, unfortunately these scenarios sometimes come about to exceptionally good persons.

The Human Resources manager then stated that because such a situation can’t be undone, what’s essential is what the individual does from this point in time forward. As stated by the Human Resources director, “does the particular person learn from his/her mistakes or does she or he develop a pattern of alcohol related problems that cause the particular person long-term suffering and pain”?

Fortunately, Shelly Did Not Have a History of Heavy and Irresponsible Drinking

Just before completing their conversation, the Human Resources director explained to Shelly that it was quite positive that she doesn’t have a track record of irresponsible and unhealthy drinking. Furthermore, she hasn’t had an alcohol-related issue since her university days (which was nearly 11 years ago). As a result, Shelly ought to be able to deal with her “drunk driving” arrest with sorrow but also with a degree of self-confidence knowing that she will face and process this difficulty and become an even better person in the not too distant future.

Shelly thanked the Human Resources director for his supportive and stimulating words and then walked over towards the company employee’s assistance program to discuss her “drunk driving” arrest, her participation in careless and irresponsible drinking over the weekend, and her interest to employ a DUI lawyer to represent her “driving while intoxicated” case.

After listening to Shelly’s “story,” the psychologist that was part of the company employee’s assistance program articulated Shelly’s immediate “plan of action” that she needed to address and follow. First, she would be required to take a DUI class to learn more DUI facts and information. Second, she would also be required to take an alcohol abuse class to address her possible problem drinking. Third, she would be required to see a psychiatrist, therapist, psychologist, or counselor about her depression. And finally, it would be an especially pragmatic thing to do if she were to meet with a DUI lawyer about her DWI arrest.

Shelly Feels a Sense of Relief Knowing That She Will Learn From Her Oversight and Grow To Be Even More Sensible and Successful

It was very clear that Shelly was incredibly depressed with the whole “driving while intoxicated” predicament, but after talking to the Human Resources director and to the healthcare practitioner in the company employee’s assistance program, she felt a sense of relief knowing that she would actually learn from her mistake and turn out to be even more healthy and balanced, even more accountable and successful, and an even more thankful woman.

The Depression, Alcohol Related Problems, and Alcohol Related Deaths That Are Interlinked With Abusive and Heavy Drinking

May 20th, 2010

How many individuals face major problems in their lives because they received a “driving under the influence” conviction? On an annual basis, how many alcoholics fail to get the professional alcohol treatment they need? How many junior high, high school, and college students lose their lives every year due to an alcohol overdose? How many people experience alcohol related depression? How many individuals die each year from a condition that is totally preventable, such as alcohol poisoning? How many individuals get injured or lose their lives in alcohol related traffic accidents every year? How many people are the victims of alcohol related crime or violence each and every year? How many individuals lose their lives every year because of drinking problems? How many children are born each year with fetal alcohol syndrome? How many people’s lives are cut short due to abusive and excessive drinking?

Why Would Anyone Want to Drink in an Excessive and Abusive Manner?

So what’s the point in asking these questions? Basically to highlight the devastating and destructive nature of careless and abusive drinking. Indeed, and based on the above questions, I wonder why anyone would choose to drink in an abusive and excessive manner.

Stated more forcefully, with the host of relationship difficulties, legal proceedings, employment dilemmas, health issues, and financial problems that are associated with alcohol dependency and chronic alcohol abuse, why would any individual with good problem solving skills want to drink in a hazardous and excessive manner? If truth be told when some of the above topics are put under the microscope more closely, hazardous drinking becomes more illogical and makes even less sense.

Wouldn’t you think that alcoholics would be able to see some of the alcohol symptoms that they manifest? In a similar manner doesn’t it seem plausible to think that many more families would involve themselves in an alcohol intervention for the individual in the household who is an alcohol abuser or an alcoholic? Not only this but wouldn’t you think that people who drink abusively would try to learn more about their drinking behavior by reading about various alcohol related statistics?

After reviewing the medical research literature, the point is so critical that it needs to be reiterated: With all of the damaging and unhealthy outcomes that are directly or indirectly associated with continuous and repetitive alcohol addiction and alcohol abuse, why would any individual want to engage in hazardous drinking?

What Can be Done About the Pervasive Nature of Alcohol Abuse and Alcohol Addiction in the U.S.?

So what can be done about the widespread nature of alcohol abuse and alcohol dependency in the U.S.?

  1. Our students need more meaningful and more relevant preventative and educational approaches and methods so that more students at all grade levels, including those at college, are “reached.
  2. With a similar line of reasoning, our students need to learn how to become problem solvers in life rather than getting easily drawn to the ”quick fix” and the “instant gratification” of a drug or alcohol abuse ”high” or “buzz”.
  3. People who are alcoholics or alcohol abusers need to look at themselves in the mirror and ask why they are not getting the professional alcohol treatment they need.
  4. Society needs to get the message to more individuals about the destructive and debilitating consequences of unhealthy and excessive drinking.

There’s Room For Hope if Those Who Engage in Hazardous and Abusive Drinking Can Become Motivated to Get the Alcohol Treatment They Require

There’s a lot of room for hope and optimism if people can start drinking responsibly and those who engage in excessive and unhealthy drinkingcan become motivated to get the alcohol rehab they require. Indeed, why put your loved ones through pain, suffering, and turmoil because of your repeated and continuous drinking when you have the power to control your life by drinking in moderation or even abstaining from drinking if you cannot control your drinking behavior?

A Young Man Drinks in an Abusive Manner, Gets Inspired to Get Treatment for Alcohol Addiction and Depression, and Enhances His Life

May 19th, 2010

Stanley began drinking excessively when he was a junior in college. Fortunately for him, even though he drank excessively when he was a teen and a young adult, when he got beyond the age of twenty-five he almost always drank in moderation.

After he completed his education he eventually landed a job at a local aluminum processing plant where he worked his way up from stock person, to office assistant, to purchasing assistant, to purchasing agent. Unlike his other positions, as the purchasing agent he again and again took existing vendors and potential vendors to lunch and to a variety of sporting events.

Though it was not written in stone, meeting with potential vendors and existing vendors routinely involved situations in which alcohol was present. In point of fact, over the past seventeen months, Stanley had started to noticeably increase his work related and his social drinking. This has resulted in a quandary. More explicitly, the more successful he became as a purchasing agent, the more heavily he began to drink.

His Increasing Bouts of Depression Also Made Him Wonder Whether He Was Becoming Alcohol Dependent

In truth, it didn’t take long at all before Stanley’s careless and hazardous drinking started to negatively affect his relationships, his health, his work efficiency, his mental health, and the money in his savings account. After many weeks of excessive drinking, Stanley, in actual fact, began to get worried about his irresponsible and abusive drinking and wondered whether his alcohol related issues were alcoholism signs. Furthermore, his increasing bouts of depression also made him wonder whether he was becoming an alcohol dependent individual. In a word, Stanley clearly needed to learn more about the facts about alcohol abuse and alcoholism.

Stanley Needs Alcohol Detox and Alcohol Treatment For His Alcoholism and a Medical Evaluation Regarding His Depression

So Stanley used his problem solving ability, called his physician, and scheduled an appointment for a complete physical exam. A week later after seeing his healthcare practitioner, Stanley regrettably discovered that he was an alcoholic. His family doctor informed Stanley that he needed to get alcohol detox and alcohol treatment for his alcohol addiction and that he also needed to get treatment for his depression. In short, Stanley needed treatment for his alcoholism and depression.

The Positive News is That After His Treatment For Alcohol Dependency and For Depression, He Felt Like a New Individual

His family doctor suggested to Stanley that he take a two-month leave of absence from work and get enrolled in a quality in-patient alcohol rehabilitation clinic where he could also be treated for his depression. This is precisely what Stanley did. The positive news is that after his treatment for depression and for alcohol dependency, he felt like a new individual. Indeed, now that he was sober he hardly ever got depressed and he now understood how to better manage his finances, his relationships, his job, and his health.

Not unexpectedly, the most difficult “test” Stanley encountered was at work. More specifically, he still took his existing vendors and potential vendors to lunch and to various sporting events, but after his alcohol rehab he managed to abstain from drinking while entertaining his clients.

It can be emphasized that Stanley also learned that none of his potential vendors or his existing vendors thought any less of him because of his non-alcoholic lifestyle. Instead, he learned that his potential vendors and existing vendors thought even more highly of him for staying true to his convictions.

After Stanley went through alcohol treatment, however, he learned that he was a person who, for whatever reason, could not drink in moderation or drink responsibly. In truth he learned the hard way that if he stayed away from drinking, all of the other significant parts of his life would be enhanced. Every once-in-a-while, Stanley missed drinking, but the better relationships, health, finances, and the better work performance he experienced more than offset his love of drinking.

How To Improve Yourself One Step At A Time

May 18th, 2010

Oftentimes, life is no picnic. We end up spending far too much time working and taking care of everyone else in our lives. This leaves very little or no time at all to spend on ourselves. Not taking any time to do the things we enjoy or to pamper ourselves can leave us feeling low and tired. If you need to give yourself a much needed boost of confidence and energy, this article might be able to help.

A lot of people start changing things about themselves when they start to feel down. They feel that this will make them feel better, but it usually does not. It is important to carefully assess any changes you wish to make to yourself and to your life in general before you make them. Figure out why you want to make those specific changes and whether they are worth it.

If you find it difficult to assess your own emotions or why you have them, it may help to talk to a professional, such as a therapist, or to a very close friend or family member whom you can trust. You never know how much better talking can make you feel until you do it.

It is not uncommon for people to begin changing the way they look in order to try and boost their confidence and feel happier. This usually does not work and is just a temporary fix that can result in overspending and an unhealthy obsession. It is important to always remind yourself that the way you look and the clothes you wear, like expensive brown boots and suits, do not define who you are.

Sometimes, issues with self esteem are linked to poor eating and exercise habits. If you are not getting enough of the right foods in your diet, this may be partially responsible for the way you are currently feeling. Additionally, lack of exercise is directly linked to feelings of sadness and low energy levels. Remember, you are not changing your diet and exercise routine for weight loss, it is for your well being.

Make time for yourself each week. This time should be uninterrupted by other issues and people. Use this time to do whatever makes you happy, like going for a day in the park, to the spa, reading, or creating something. Do not let anyone interfere with this time.

Allow yourself to enjoy the good things about you. Be proud of yourself and allow yourself to feel confident about who you are.

It takes time and effort to start improving the way you feel about yourself, but it is doable. Pamper yourself and do the things you love. Reflect on your good qualities and always keep in mind that you are not defined by anything you own, like trendy hobo bags or fancy cars.

Recognizing Anxiety Symptoms in Yourself and Others

May 15th, 2010

Anxiety attacks and panic disorders affect an estimated 2.4 million Americans according to WebMD.com, and women are more likely to experience them than men. A person that has an anxiety attack will feel uncomfortable and experience an sudden acute feeling of overwhelm and panic. Anxiety attacks can occur on a regular basis, or randomly in people of all ages. Here are some ways to recognize anxiety symptoms:

1. Difficulty speaking and concentrating. One sign that a person is suffering from extreme anxiety or a panic attack is when they have difficulty speaking properly and focusing. They may stumble upon their words, stutter, and feel like they can’t get their thoughts under control.

2. Chest pains or tightness. Someone who has a tendency of having anxiety attacks usually stops breathing properly. The inability to breathe normally may cause severe chest pains or tightness and difficulty swallowing.

3. Excessive energy. An individual who is always on the move and are hyper active may be suffering from anxiety. They may feel like they can’t relax or will experience long periods of restlessness or agitation. This is a little known anxiety symptom and is often ignored.

4. Numbness or tingling in the hands and feet. Most people who are about to have a full-blown anxiety attack will start to breathe in a shallow manner, limiting their oxygen intake. The hands and feet may begin to feel numb or get pins and needles, especially if a person is seated in a constricted position.

5. Heart palpitations or a racing heart. A person who will have a panic attack will feel their heart beating rapidly. Increased heart rate and elevated blood pressure are common anxiety symptoms.

6. Extreme cravings for sugar and sweets. For those who experience anxiety symptoms on a regular basis, eating high-fat, high-carbohydrate foods serves the purpose of calming them down. If too much food is consumed at one sitting or these kinds of food are eaten too often, the person may suffer from other health problems. Food can only numb anxiety symptoms temporarily; as soon as the “high” wears off, the anxiety attack or anxiety problems will return, and may get worse.

7. Extreme fatigue. Constant stress on the mind and body from an anxiety attack or anxiety problems can leave the person feeling worn out and extremely fatigued. Anxiety triggers several chemical reactions in the body that directly affect the central nervous system. The adverse results of these chemical reactions is fatigue and the inability to rest enough to recover.

An Alcoholic Enrolls in Rehab, Gets Alcohol Detoxification and Treatment For His Alcohol Dependency and His Depression, and Starts to Live More Fully

May 5th, 2010
