You have to understand depression before you can treat it. Depression is no laughing matter because about 15 million people in America suffer from it. The alarming dilemma is that over a third of those Americans will not seek any type of treatment. It’s the stereotypes associated with mental illness that plague far too many people. They refuse to allow a label placed on them that might damage their good character. To treat depression first it has to be diagnosed. Diagnosis doesn’t happen while the sufferer hides the problem. That’s the terrible merry go round of depression.

Depression stems from many things. Biological, emotional, environmental and physical factors can result in depression . DNA also has a role. Family history has a major part to play. It is not just family history but family life in general. Living comes along with a lot of stress. Some undergo a daily fight just to make ends meet. For others the stress comes from making it in the world. Abuse such as sexual, physical or even emotional can overload people with anxiety. The list goes on and on.

In the early stages depression is often hard to diagnose. Even while a loved one suffers from this disease the signs may be hard to notice. Everyone gets down in the dumps once in a while. It’s not uncommon. The affects of depression go much deeper. When the symptoms begin to start taking over your life than the opportunity for early detection has been missed. People with depression feel lonely and fed up with general living. Signs of hope in their lives are gone. Sleep habits and enjoyment from life no longer exist. At this point treatment has become literally a matter of life and death.

In treating depression you have to reinstall hope and purpose into those that are suffering. Psychotherapy often accomplishes this.  This is a long term treatment that won’t have immediate results, but it works. Anti-depressants like Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft, Lexapro, Celex, or Luvox can also help . These drugs are effective but they are accompanied by many side effects as well. There are also natural herbs that have been proven clinically to bring about positive results in treating depression as well. Depression support groups also exist. Medical professionals should be consulted if you or someone you know shows symptoms of depression.
