The Adverse Effects of Too Much Work and Irresponsible and Hazardous Drinking and The Inspiration For Alcohol Treatment And Depression Therapy

Work was becoming too hectic for a young police officer named Gary. Although he had only been on the police force for three-and-a-half years, he was already known as a hard worker who almost never turned down working overtime. In reality, he was now working twenty to twenty-five hours of overtime each week and, as a result, he felt like he was losing his handle on his personal life. What complicated the situation was the fact that Gary started going out drinking with a group of fellow officers after his shift.

What Began as a Good Time Soon Became Excessive and Careless Drinking

What began as a good time very soon turned into abusive and irresponsible drinking and then into a negative cycle of feeling tired every morning when he got up for work, working more long hours, and then going drinking with his buddies after work.

Noticeably Gary was in a health related and psychological rut and going through some adverse alcohol effects on the body. Where Gary really observed alcohol related issues and alcohol short term effects, on the other hand, was in his family life and in his marriage. His wife wasn’t really a complainer, but she commonly begged him to stay at home more with the family rather than going out and spending money while drinking with his fellow officers.

Gary’s Abusive and Unhealthy Drinking Makes Him Feel More Depressed and Negatively Affects His Personality

In a similar way, Gary’s irresponsible and hazardous drinking also adversely affected his personality. Stated briefly, the more abusively he drank, the less patience he had with any difficulties or issues that arose regarding his children or his wife and the more depression he experienced.

It Was Clear to Gary That His Hazardous Drinking Was Adversely Affecting His Work, Pocketbook, Relationship With His Family, and His Health

In his heart of hearts, it was obvious to Gary that his excessive and irresponsible drinking was adversely affecting his work, health, relationship with his family, and his pocketbook. So one Friday afternoon Gary decided to talk to Jerry, a trusted old police officer buddy that he greatly admired.

Gary told Jerry how abusive and hazardous drinking was adversely affecting his health, pocketbook, relationship with his family, and his work. Jerry told Gary that he totally understood because just around twelve years ago, he too became involved with careless and hazardous drinking. In point of fact Jerry stated to Gary that abusive and excessive drinking can create so many problems in an individual’s life that just about everything of significance can be ruined. And finally, Jerry recommended that Gary schedule an appointment with an alcohol therapist at the work-affiliated alcohol abuse center.

Due to the fact that his employee’s assistance program was affiliated with this rehabilitation center, it was not only very affordable but also quite convenient to seek rehab about his unhealthy and irresponsible drinking. And since the personnel at the chemical dependency rehab clinic was competent, non-judgmental, and supportive, Gary would be able to get alcohol treatment that made sense to him and something he could follow through on.

After talking to his counselor about how his drinking was ruining his pocketbook, health, work, and his relationship with his family, Gary realized that he was burning the candle at both ends with his excessive work hours and his abusive and irresponsible drinking. Once he understood that he was getting himself into a rut, with the help of his doctor, and after four months in therapy, he was at last able to quit drinking and stop working overtime.

Due to His Alcohol Treatment Gary Felt More Healthy and Had Much More Energy

The result was that Gary perceived life in a different way now that he was in alcohol recovery. Stated briefly, due to his alcohol rehab he not only noticed that he actually had more money now even though he was working far fewer hours each week, but he was more patient when interacting with his wife and his children, he felt better and more healthy, and he had more quality time to spend with his family. Strangely enough, now that he quit drinking, Gary and his wife were not only starting to save some money for a new house but he also felt more self esteem than anytime since he and his wife got married.
